Over the last 4 years, uncompensated care revenue loss has continued to climb. The American Hospital Association(AHA) reported $100.4 billion for 2020 in underpayments, up from $75.8 billion in 2019. Underpayments for Medicare alone include a shortfall of $75.6 billion. This means hospitals receive payment of only 84 cents for every dollar spent by hospitals caring for Medicare patients.
With multiple locations and thousands of Medicare patients discharged to a post-acute care facility annually, it’s incumbent upon health systems and hospitals to identify claims that failed to transfer under Medicare’s Post-Acute Care Transfer rules.
